Kirsten's highlights of Syria
Syria was my first trip ever to the Middle East. I did not know what to expect and was immensely surprised!
The Syrians (90% Arabs) are extremely friendly and open to tourists. Their religion (75% Muslims) does not allow them to touch you or to drag you into their shops, which makes shopping in the Souks (Bazaars) a delight.
- Some of Syria's history dates back to the 4th millennium BC.
- Damascus is the world's oldest inhabited city. You can find relics like Aramean temples and the Omayyad Mosque, prototype of Islamic architecture.
- In Aleppo, Abraham is said to have milked his cow, giving the site of the city it's name, Halab (Arabic for "milk").
- Palmyra was the home of the Arabian Queen Zenobia. It remains one of most famous capitals of the ancient world.
- The nomads in the desert like to invite you to share a tea or a glass of goat milk in their tents.
